What to pack last when moving is simple: pack last what you will need first. That means bedding, one change of clothes per person, toiletries, phone chargers, medication, basic tools, cleaning supplies, and the kettle or coffee maker. Those go into one clearly marked box that travels in your car, not on the truck, and it is the first thing you open at the new place. Everything else gets packed in reverse order of how often you use it.

What to Pack Last When Moving

These are the things that stay out until the final morning, because you use them right up to the moment you leave and again the moment you arrive.

  • Bedding for every bed you plan to sleep in that night
  • One change of clothes per person, plus whatever you are wearing
  • Toiletries, toothbrushes, towels, toilet paper, soap
  • Medication and anything prescription
  • Phone and laptop chargers
  • The kettle or coffee maker, and mugs
  • A basic tool kit: screwdriver, Allen keys, utility knife, tape measure
  • Cleaning supplies, cloths, garbage bags, paper towel
  • Pet food, bowls and litter
  • Anything a child or a baby needs within reach

The Open First Box, Item by Item

Make it one box per household, or one per person if you have a large family. Use a distinctive box or mark it on all four sides so nobody has to hunt for it. Keep it light enough to carry comfortably, since the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety notes that awkward, overloaded lifts are where most handling injuries come from.

  • Utility knife or scissors. Put it in last so it is on top. Cutting the first box open with a house key is a rite of passage nobody needs.
  • Toilet paper, hand soap, a towel. The first thing anyone needs in a new home.
  • Cleaning cloths and an all purpose spray. Shelves and counters get wiped before anything goes on them.
  • Garbage bags. You will fill several on day one.
  • Phone chargers and a power bar.
  • Light bulbs. Empty houses are missing more of these than you expect.
  • Basic tools. Beds get rebuilt on day one, and shelves get levelled.
  • Kettle, mugs, a few plates, cutlery, a knife, a pan. Enough to make coffee and one meal without ordering in.
  • Snacks and water. Move day meals get skipped otherwise.
  • A first aid kit.

What Never Goes on the Truck

Separate from the open first box, some packing essentials should simply stay with you in your own vehicle. Not because they are unsafe on a truck, but because you do not want to be looking for them in a stack of boxes.

  • Passports, birth certificates, deeds, leases, insurance papers
  • Keys, fobs, garage remotes and parking passes for both addresses
  • Jewellery, cash and small valuables
  • Laptops, hard drives and anything irreplaceable
  • Medication, including anything refrigerated
  • Photo albums and small sentimental items

There is also a category that cannot travel at all. Movers do not carry flammables, propane tanks, gasoline, paint thinner, aerosols or open liquids. Use them up, give them away or dispose of them properly before move day.

What to Pack First When Moving, Weeks Ahead

What to pack first when moving is the reverse of the same principle. Start with whatever you would not miss for a month.

  1. Storage areas. Basement, crawl space, the top of the closet, the garage and the shed. These hold the most and get left to last, which is exactly backwards.
  2. Out of season clothing. Winter coats in June, shorts in January.
  3. Books, decor and photos. Nothing here is needed in the next month.
  4. Guest and spare rooms. Pack them completely and shut the door.
  5. Formal dishes and specialty kitchen equipment. The stand mixer and the good plates can go early.
  6. Most of the kitchen, leaving out one pan, one pot and a few plates.
  7. Everyday clothing, down to a few days worth.
  8. Bathrooms, down to what one person needs for two days.

Labelling So the Box Is Actually Findable

A perfect open first box is useless if it ends up at the back of the truck under twenty other boxes. Three habits prevent that.

  • Mark it on all four sides and the top. Boxes get stacked in whatever orientation fits.
  • Make it visually different. Coloured tape, a bright label, or a box that is not the same as the other forty.
  • Do not let it go on the truck. The safest system is your own back seat. If it must go on the truck, tell the crew lead and it goes on last so it comes off first.

Label every other box by room and contents on the side, not only the top, so a stack can be read without unstacking it. Packing Last When Your Access Is Timed

This changes if you are moving out of a condo or apartment with a booked elevator slot. In a house you have some slack on the morning. In a building you do not, because the slot ends whether you are finished or not.

So in a building, pack everything the night before, including the last minute items, and keep only the open first box and your personal bag out. Take those down yourself before the crew starts, so the elevator time is spent entirely on the load.   • The shower. Everything in it gets left because nobody looks behind the curtain on the last pass.
  • The freezer. Empty and defrost it the night before, not the morning of.
  • Under the sink. Cleaning supplies, and a surprising amount of liquid.

  1. Everything boxed, closed and labelled except the open first box and your overnight bag.
  2. Freezer emptied, defrosted and dried.
  3. Beds stripped, and taken apart if you are doing that yourself.
  4. Open first box and personal bag loaded into your own car.
  5. Path cleared: front walk, hallway, stairs.
  6. Phones charged.
