How long does a local move take in Winnipeg? Most take between three and nine hours. A one bedroom apartment with good access is usually three to five hours with two movers. A two bedroom condo is four to six. A three bedroom house is a full day, often seven to nine hours, with three movers. Those are working ranges, not promises, because the two things that actually set the number are how well you packed and how far the crew walks to the truck.
These figures come from the crews at Calculated Moving, a Winnipeg company founded in 2018 by Kade Cote (president) and Evan Martin (vice president). We run more than 18 trained movers across residential, commercial and long distance jobs and hold a 4.9 star rating from over 483 Google reviews. How Long Does a Local Move Take by Home Size?
Use this as a planning range. Every one of these assumes packing is finished before the crew arrives.
| Home | Typical crew | Typical hours |
|---|---|---|
| Studio or single room | 2 movers | 2 to 3 hours |
| One bedroom apartment | 2 movers | 3 to 5 hours |
| Two bedroom apartment or condo | 2 to 3 movers | 4 to 6 hours |
| Three bedroom house | 3 movers | 7 to 9 hours |
| Four bedroom house | 3 to 4 movers | Full day, sometimes two |
Local moves are billed hourly, so hours and cost move together. We keep the pricing side separate so you can see both clearly: our guide on how much movers cost in Winnipeg gives the dollar ranges by home size, and moving prices and rates in Winnipeg explains what the hourly rate covers.
How Many Movers Do You Need?
How many movers do I need is the other half of how long does a local move take, and more movers is usually cheaper rather than more expensive, which surprises people. Two movers at a lower hourly rate over nine hours often costs more than three movers at a higher rate over six, and you get your evening back.
Crew size is not only about speed. Some items simply need three people to move safely: a large sectional up a turn in a staircase, a heavy dresser, an upright appliance. Sending two movers to a job that needs three does not save money. It slows every heavy item down and increases the chance something gets damaged.
- Two movers suits studios, one bedrooms and small two bedrooms with elevator access.
- Three movers suits most houses, any home with a finished basement, and anything with a lot of stairs.
- Four movers makes sense for large houses, tight timelines, or a possession day where you have to be out and in on the same date.
What the Hourly Clock Covers
The clock runs while the crew is working on your move: protecting the home, loading, driving between addresses, unloading and placing furniture. It stops when the job is done.
Separately from the hourly time there is a flat travel and preparation fee, which covers getting the truck, equipment and crew to you and back. It is a single stated line rather than a running meter on either end, which is deliberate: door to door billing rewards traffic and punishes you for living further out. There is also a valuation and consumables charge covering the protective materials used on the day. All of it is set out on our pricing page before you book.
What Makes a Move Run Long
In order of how much time they actually cost, based on what our crews see.
1. Packing That Is Not Finished
This is the biggest one by a distance, and it is the most expensive way to pack. A crew that arrives to open closets and a half done kitchen cannot load in an efficient order, so they work around you instead of through the house. If the packing will not be done, book packing services in Winnipeg for the day before instead.
2. Loose Items With No Box
Every unboxed item is its own trip. Forty loose things from a garage is forty trips. Eight boxes is eight. Uniform boxes also stack on a dolly, so they move four or five at a time instead of one. Cheap time, bought in advance.
3. The Walk From the Door to the Truck
A long front walk, a boulevard tree blocking the truck, an apartment loading zone around the back. Add twenty steps each way across two hundred trips and you have added an hour without anything going wrong.
4. Stairs and Elevators
Stairs slow every item. A shared elevator is worse than stairs on a low floor, because the crew waits rather than walks. If you are in a building, booking the service elevator properly is the single highest value thing you can do. Our guide to condo and apartment moving in Winnipeg covers how to do it.
5. Decisions Made on the Day
Every “actually, leave that one” costs a minute of standing still. Twenty of them costs twenty minutes. Decide before the truck arrives and label anything that is staying.
6. Furniture That Needs Taking Apart
Beds, large dining tables and sectionals often have to come apart and go back together. That is normal and we do it, but it is time on both ends. See what movers take apart and what they do not for what to expect and what you can do yourself in advance.
A Realistic Move Day, Hour by Hour
This is a two bedroom condo to a house, three movers, an eight o clock start.
- 8:00. Crew arrives, walks the unit with you, confirms what is coming and what is staying. Floor and door frame protection goes down.
- 8:20. Boxes start moving. They go first because they stack and they build the base of the load.
- 10:00. Furniture. Wrapping, disassembly where needed, then out.
- 12:00. Last sweep of the unit, closets, balcony and locker. Load is secured.
- 12:30. Drive across the city.
- 1:00. Protection down at the new address, then unload. Furniture is placed where you want it, not stacked in the entry.
- 3:30. Beds reassembled, boxes in the right rooms, walkthrough, payment.
Note how little of that is driving. On a local move the drive is rarely more than half an hour. Everything else is carrying, and carrying is what you can influence. Local moving companies that bill door to door from their depot are charging you for traffic, which is worth checking before you book. The Canadian Association of Movers publishes an independent checklist for vetting a company.
In-Home Moves and Single Rooms
Not every local job is a full move. Shifting furniture between floors for a renovation, emptying a room so flooring can go in, or moving a single heavy item across the house are all common, and they are usually a short two mover booking. Single item moves start from $250 plus GST. If you are only trying to get one awkward piece up a staircase, say so when you call and we will size it properly instead of quoting a whole move.
Booking Windows, and Why the First of the Month Is Hardest
Winnipeg leases and a large share of possession dates land on the first, so that day is the busiest of the month for every mover in the city. The end of the month is close behind, and Fridays and Saturdays fill before weekdays.
If your dates have any flexibility, mid month on a weekday is easier to book, easier to get the crew size you want, and the day runs calmer. Winter is the quietest season overall and moves happen here all winter long.
Eight Things That Shorten Your Move Day
- Finish packing the night before. Everything boxed, closed and labelled by room.
- Box the small loose things, especially in the garage, the basement and under the sink.
- Empty and defrost the fridge and freezer the night before.
- Take beds apart yourself if you are comfortable doing it, and bag the hardware.
- Reserve the closest legal parking spot at both addresses.
- Clear hallways, stairs and the front walk.
- Label anything that is not coming, and get rid of it in advance rather than moving it. Junk removal in Winnipeg on the same day is usually the cheapest way.
- Keep pets and small children somewhere else for the loading window.
For the full run up to the day, our Winnipeg moving checklist works backwards from move day to eight weeks out.
Ask Local Movers Winnipeg Wide for a Real Time Estimate
How long does a local move take for you specifically? The ranges above are honest averages, but your move is not an average. Access, box count and stairs move the number in both directions, which is why we ask about them before quoting rather than after.
Call (204) 250-4075 or request a quote online and tell us the home size, the floor, whether there is an elevator and roughly how many boxes you expect. We will give you an hours estimate and a crew size that fits the job.
